There's huge, and growing, demand among consumers for Internet radio (at least during the 9AM-5PM workday), as shown by the rapid growth of our AccuRadio project.

From ZDNet: "Worldwide revenue
from wireless network services will more than triple over the next four years, according to a report released Tuesday by In-Stat.

"The market researcher says revenue will rise to $3.46 billion in 2009, up from the $969 million expected in 2005.

"The growth is being fueled by an increasing number of hot spots, the researcher said, predicting that the number of hot-spot locations will double in the next four years from the present 100,000...

"According to In-Stat, the most growth in the sector will come from the cafe segment. The segment--which includes coffee shops, fast food and restaurants--will grow 2.5 times from 40,000 venues now to just less than 100,000 hot spots by 2009, In-Stat said.

"Significantly, just about a month ago, Intel, with the help of many others, such as IBM, Dell and Cisco, launched a program for rolling out municipalitywide wireless networks in 13 cities. The cities that join the initiative, dubbed Digital Communities, are meant to have a broadband wireless infrastructure that lets the public better connect with police and fire personnel, as well as with public-works employees."

From MediaMix: "A MediaSpan study
performed by Frank N. Magid Associates of nearly 35,000 radio listeners across all formats in major U.S. markets shows that local radio hasan opportunity to grow its relationship with audiences if they further integrate their on-air and online programming and promotions.

"'This was a massive study that shows pretty clearly that while radio is still a primary medium for most consumers, other new media forms are changing the way that users, especially younger audiences, relate to radio,' says Mark Zagorski, CMO of study sponsor MediaSpan. 'In order for stations to renew and grow their audience relationships with a new generation of listeners, they will need to incorporate new media activities such as podcasts and streaming and integrated music downloads into their daily on-air and online programming,'...

"As expected, the study confirmed that listeners access radio station across multiple platforms with 40% of 18-29 year olds (versus 28% of those 30+) listening to streaming music from radio station weekly...

"Use of the Internet at work is an important characteristic of radio station website visitors, as 69% have access at their place of work, whereas only 40% of the total Internet population has access at work. This fact coupled with a Socio-Economic-Status figure of nearly two times the national online average means that radio website surfers are 'the cream of the crop' for online advertisers'."

Reader Feedback

"You seem to have attributed my story as one written by my father. It is not. I am the publisher of Audio Video Revolution (AVRev.com) which is the second largest AV publication in the world - read by an audited 279,000 AV enthusiasts.

"My father [Jerry Del Colliano, former publisher of "Inside Radio"] is a Clinical Professor at USC's Thornton School of Music where he runs their Music Media Lab and teaches various courses.

"Let me be clear however
- I believe that Wi-fi is the future. Terrestrial radio is in the last days of a glutinous empire. Media conglomerates own over-valued properties (FM stations) when Gen X and Gen Y look to other media for their information. For me, my cell phone competes with morning drive radio. And terrestrial radio has actually NEVER been played in my newest car considering I have Sirius (I have also owned XM but removed it) installed."
